Vintage hairstyles for naturally curly hair

Sometimes I get questions about what to do with naturally very curly hair. Some people get it chemically relaxed so it's easier to traditionally work with, some use water to un-curl and re-curl in the desired way, and some just work with what they have.
These girls are great examples of not needing to change the texture of your hair for a vintage style. Angelique Noir has a few video tutorials on how to achieve a 1940s look. Also check out The Retro Natural for lots of inspiration and tutorials, she covers a range of deco to mid century styles.
If anyone else knows of or has a blog, video, etc. specifically for working with naturally curly hair, please send it my way! I'll post it here for everyone to reference.

Finally put the charms I've collected on my charm bracelet. I still need re-enforcement loops, but it's really nice to see them all together! I had some from a roadtrip from a few years ago when we went up to Niagra Falls (pre blog! Weird!), and one from The Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Most are from the road trip over the summer, which include: Wall Drug cowboy, Colorado State, Park Ranger from Yellowstone, Kansas State, Laura Ingalls home, Titanic Exhibit, Cowboy hat from Deadwood, Mt.Rushmore, Laura Ingalls Homestead, Brandon Missouri, and Wyoming landscape.

Oh god I never realized how creepy the Mt Rushmore charm is until now. Look at Abe! He looks like he's going to eat your soul!

Organization: Magazines

I don't know about you, but I have a hard time throwing out magazines with hosehold tips and recipes. Martha Stewart taking the lead.
I don't even subscribe to magazines, these are just issues I've been given, found in "free" boxes, or end up on my shelf in some other magical way. But they really do take up so much room! Not to mention it'll take me ages to find one recipe that I think I saw a month ago.
Solution: Cut out the pages I want and put them in a binder.

Using an X-acto knife I cut out recipes and household tips and decor ideas. Some recipes are cut and taped on a page because I wanted just one recipe and not the whole page it came on.
Then they go in lightweight plastic sleeves (I ended up using over 200).
It's all still a work in progress, but has been great so far. You can do this with any magazine: fashion, craft, hobby, etc. and organize it further with tabs.
I'm going to categorize my home binder with "Decor" "Housekeeping" "Clothing care" and "Renovations".
For the binder spine (is it called a spine like a book?) I cut a piece from a scrap of vintage wallpaper and stenciled basic labels. Much less space taken up, much easier to find things I want, and looks cute to boot!
Just be sure to be careful when using an X-acto knife, they can be very sharp and slippery!

Well, kind of.
Does wearing pretty dresses and drinking tea count as a job?
Today was another photoshoot with Fab Gabs, and this time I co-modeled with the ever fun Lindsey, with lots and lots of fluffy white wedding dresses. One even reminded me of the style of my wedding dress.
There were many beautiful items, but as soon as I put this little floral frock on, it really begged to come home with me. It's spring soon right?
Right?!?

Sam's birthday is this week, and chances are he'll be working so my mom and step-dad took us out for dinner at P.F. Changs, and a little shopping on the side. I wore my trench coat, and think I may have figured out what the little tab does at the neck. Scarf loop? Anyone know for sure? I even looked at a trechcoat book at Powells and found absolutely nothing on the detail.

But.

I did find what I think may be the best book ever. Seriously.
It's called "Clothes with Character", and this particular copy is from 1941. It has everything. A perfect balance of text and illustration, on clothing, textiles, styles, flattering tips, budgeting, history, care of. I could go on. And soon, a post will blossom from this amazing book. Or like, fifty.
Oh and I got a book from 1954 on the fur industry. Really interesting, and has some invaluable information on identifying furs of the era.
And we finally got some Martini "glasses". They're stainless steel, but I'm gonna go ahead and call them chrome, that sounds prettier.
They make me feel like Bruce Wayne. Or Chuck Bass. Or...some sort of awesome 30s temptress in a Poirot story.
Yeah, I'll go with that.
OH. And I started a Vintage Ryan Gosling Tumblr. Because I think those thinks are hilarious and for some reason there was every niche of "Hey Girl"s but vintage covered. But don't worry, I fixed that. So go submit something. Or just go giggle.

Hat etiquette for women

Sure, women wear hats in this time period, but not anything like they wore hats 60 years ago or more. Today, modern hats are chosen more for their function than appearance. Shading the eyes, keeping warm, shielding hair from rain.
So what about when you wear a vintage hat, one purely for decoration?
First I would like to clear one thing up:
A woman wearing a decorative hat, does not take it off once inside. It's often a misconception that since men take off their hats once inside, women should as well.
{The hat matches the dress, and is pinned on, not something I grabbed and slapped on}
A woman's hat is a part of her outfit as a whole, not an afterthought as a mans is. Also, your hair is probably styled around the hat, pinned on at various places, so if you take off your hat you may as well take off your belt and petticoat too.
Now, here's when we get into the slightly more complicated areas:
{This hat is mostly functional, and would be removed once inside}
If your hat is functional (but pretty as well!) it's probably best to remove it when you step inside. A soggy wool cap isn't exactly adding anything to an outfit when you're in the presence of dryness, and if you take it off and set it somewhere, it gives it a chance to dry off.
{A hat this wide is great for sunny days, but can be a nuisance inside}
A sunhat is generally wide brimmed, and an inside environment is quite a bit more constricted than outside.
Removing it will avoid any awkward "Sorry I turned my head and my giant hat knocked over your heirloom vase..." situations. Although I personally thing keeping a bonnet style on inside is ok, as it's only wide at the top, but do use your best judgment in the situation.

A big, wide, or tall hat is not something for say, a theater performance, or anything where you may be in a crowd of people (church, funerals, concerts), as this will block their view of what's going on.
{Appropriate for tea, but not for the theater}
But tea is a different story. A wide brimmed hat (but not excessive) is fine, in fact it's the norm, since you won't be going around mingling, you're stationary.
{Out to lunch, a simple topper or cap is the best way to go}
A hat with a veil that covers the entire face isn't entirely appropriate for going out to eat or drinks, but if you must, the veil can simply be lifted and rest on top of the hat during the meal and replaced to it's intended place after.
{At a baseball game either wear an easily removable hat, or none at all}
But what about those times when everyone is supposed to remove their hats? In America that time is usually when something patriotic is in effect, like the pledge of allegiance, or while the national anthem is being sung. If you are wearing a hat, remove it. Wearing a complicated hat, that's pinned on and styled around, is not the best idea in these situations. Though if for some reason you're caught unexpectedly in this situation and can't take off your hat in under five seconds, leave it. It'll take you longer to fumble with pins and bands than it's worth, but be ready to apologize for your faux pas.
Hat's and formal wear usually don't mix. Cocktail hats are an exception, but when it comes to wearing a gown, or a formal dress to a dance, leave the hat at home and wear a pretty barrette instead.
{Casual family picnic needs no hat at all, but scarves and barrettes are a good alternative hair decor}
Before wearing that fabulous hat you just bought and can't wait to wear, stop and think "Is this really an appropriate hat for this particular event?"
As much as you love the pink floral topper that matches your silk rose garden dress, it's probably better suited for a wedding than a bbq.
These are all what I think, from experience and opinion, but sometimes I break my own rules! As long as you are being courteous towards others, it's fun to experiment with hats. But I hope this clears up some questions and concerns when it comes to wearing vintage hats in this era.

How to decorate a hatpin

In the 1940s it was popular for a felt hat to have a matching hatpin. There's an example of one here. You may see these items separate now, or if you're lucky they might still be together! It was also a good little project to use leftover felt scraps, and some women would make whimsical little felt covered pins in order to brighten up an old hat. They can be functional or decorative, or both! So here's a couple little ideas for your own felt covered hatpins!

{You will need}
Felt (I like wool felt for the dusty colors, but synthetic works just as well)
Plain headed hatpins.
Needle
Thread or embroidery floss
Scissors or X-acto knife

Be whimsical, creative, ridiculous! I think I'll make a kitty pin next. Or an anchor one for nautical outfits. You could even do a hatpin and matching brooch for extra coordination!

How to wear a hatpin

Wearing a hatpin is very basic. You simply pin it through the back band or lower crown of the hat, picking up a lock of hair as you pin it through. Here's a little tutorial:

For fine hair, a pin can slip a little. To prevent this, try crossing bobby pins at the back of your head, and pin through that AND your hair. Pins also work well if your hair is braided at the back.
Pins work well in felt hats, and some fabric covered hats. Be cautious when pinning through straw, as some of the older straw hats can be brittle, and can't handle a pin.
Of course wearing a wide brimmed hat on a breezy day is no good even with a hatpin. Pins don't secure a hat for high winds and dancing like a madman. They simply keep a hat from sliding off your head during normal movement.

Here's an unusual wide brimmed, asymmetrical hat. Usually if something has a brim, and is asymmetrical, it has a base closer to the head for a better foundation. This is the case with this 1950s hat, and the brown 1930s hat below. With this hat I placed a hatpin on the side, under the brim and on the base. On the other side, just for good measure and because the area is hidden, I slipped a bobby pin.


This is also an asymmetrical brimmed hat with a base, but I placed a pin at the side, base of the crown.

On 1940s tilt hats, there's usually a band, or base at the back for support. These are perfect for slipping hidden bobby pins, and often don't need a hatpin.

Another little side tilt hat, but this time a hatpin goes on the top side.

This one does sit on the back of the head, which usually just needs a pin in the back, but since it's a bonnet style with a brim at the front, an extra pin at the top is extra secure just in case there's a teeny breeze.
Pillbox styles usually require a pin at the front or back, whichever is more comfortable. If you use a pin at the front, it's a great opportunity to use a fancy one!

If you tilt it to the side, the pin goes on the top side.

Hatpins. If you wear hats, you most likely have to wear a hatpin. You may see varied lengths at antique shops, which correspond to the era/type of hat. In the 1900s when hats were large and elaborate, so were the hatpins. They could be simple, something to go with all the hats you have, or something ornate, sometimes matching one hat in particular, or being made of fine metals and jewels. At this time pins could reach up to thirteen inches, and were thought of as a weapon for Victorian women, as you can see in the illustration below.

They were so threatening that one judge ordered suffragettes to remove their hats and hatpins, just in case they used them as weapons in his court.
Even Arkansas and Illinois passed bills limiting the length of a ladies hatpin to 9 inches, or if you must have a more lengthy pin, you would need a permit for it.
"Excuse me ma'am, do you have a permit for that?"
The 1920s saw tight cloches as the height of fashion, so hatpins, if ever used, were generally decorative. Usually more like stick pins (you can tell the difference between the two by length). However after the 1920s, they were needed again, only this time on a much smaller scale.

Some hatpins you may come across are rusted, bent out of shape, or just plain dirty. For stubborn rust, gently scrape some steel wool along metal areas. For general dirt and grime, wash in mild soap and water, using a clean toothbrush to get to nooks and crannies. Though I would recommend taking fine metal and jeweled pins to a jeweler for cleaning, just to be safe. To keep your pins from becoming dull and rusted, stick them in a traditional tomato pin cushion, and sharpen them a bit using the emery sharpener (the little attached bit). For bent pins, take them to a professional, they can fit them right up for you!

Cool people I don't know: Rosemary Ferrie

A couple of years ago when down in California we went to The Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial. It's a beautiful memorial, and I could have spent ages looking at all the plaques (handsome fighter pilots, cute nurses). You can see my post featuring some photos here.
One plaque in particular never left my mind though, and that was honoring Parmely T. Ferrie and Rosemary (Egan) Ferrie. He was a captain and she a nurse, and besides being adorable, Rosemary wore a wedding gown made from the parachute Parmely used to bail out of a B-24 bomber.
That right there made me incredibly curious as to what her dress looked like, and what kind of life she led. Today she popped into my mind again, and I googled her name, only to find her obituary. First I was sad to learn of her passing, but then I clicked on the photo album, and photos of her in her parachute wedding dress popped up.
So although I'm sorry she's gone, even though I've never met her, I'm glad that she seemed to live a nice life with Parmely and now I can share her wedding dress with you, for those who were as curious as I!
They married on July 27th 1946, and had six children. She got her AA degree in San Diego, traveled extensively with her husband, and spent most of her nursing career helping alcoholics and drug addicts. Yep, this lady sounds like someone anyone would have liked to have known.

Saturday included shopping, late lunch at Jakes, people watching, new spider wearing, and looking bored in a suit...ing.
I always try to wear a suit when I go to into the city for shopping. It seems inappropriate not to, even though I look a little out of place. But I feel like going into town is a special occasion. Shopping for pleasure is something to work an afternoon around. Lunch, shopping, drinks, sightseeing. Special afternoons deserve more than the usual capri pants :)

Bangles and Bras

As a bangle collection grows, it's great, but how the heck do you store these things?

Some opt for upright storage, like a hat stand, so they stack right on it. But my problem with that is you have to take them all off the stand to get to the one you want at the base.

Some people have them mixed loose in a box, but if you're looking for a certain style/color, it can take forever to dig through.

So I store my little collection in vintage stocking boxes. They're satin quilted boxes with six sections meant for rolled up stockings. But they fit bangles perfectly!

Bras are another storage issue if you're tight on space. Drawers are reserved for sweaters and other unmentionables, and living in a small apartment, there's more wall space than floor space.

So using a vintage shoe holder works great, especially for vintage braziers, which don't have underwires to hinder fitting in a small pocket.

Organizing little collections is also a great way to do some mini spring cleaning. Take five minutes and weed out items you no longer want/need. The things you really love and use are much easier to find if they're not buried in second rate stuff.

Awesome day with Mary Van Note!

As if The Ladies Luncheon wasn't enough fun to fill a weekend, Monday I spend the afternoon with the amazing Mary Van Note! She is cuter than a witty button, and I'm so glad she wanted to meet up! We went to see The Artist, and LOVED it. So cute. So good.

I wore some assemblance of a deco outfit, and Mary was in a stunning red velvet hat and fuzzy swing coat. We met early and had breakfast at The Morning Star Cafe, then caught the show. Afterward we went to The Portland Design Collective and gawked at some pretties they have before taking over the photobooth.

First without vintage majorette hats, then with. Because that's what happens when you have majorette hats next to the photobooth.
It was a perfect way to spend a Monday, chatting about vintage things, taking silly pictures, and watching a silent film. Thank you Mary!

Ladies Luncheon

Saturday I spend the day in fabulous clothes, with fabulous people, drinking cocktails.
Nice, right?
A luncheon hosted by Julie of Fab Gabs was held at Hubers, and a group of vintage gals in our best finery gathered at a table, while other customers begged our waitress to ask what the fuss was about.
I told her to inform everyone we were famous strippers. Telling people "we just dress this way" seems to be in inadequate answer with most. It confuses them, and isn't exciting enough.
Anyway, I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time Janey of Atomic Redhead (blue suit), Rhiannon of Garb Oh Vintage, or as knitters might know, of her knitting pattern site (leopard trimmed coat), and Jennifer of Jumblelaya Vintage!
Cassandra and I arrived at the same time as Janey and Rhiannon, so we took the opportunity to take pictures before luncheon. I wish I had photos of every single person there, everyone looked amazing, and had something completely unique!

Tea for two

Today my grandma and I had tea for the first time at The Grant House. It was lovely, the service itself was nice, and the atmosphere refreshing. I've searched for places that hold regular tea service, and just happened to stumble across a place right in town. Perfect!
I wore one of my favorite outfits for the first time, a 40s rayon dress with matching hat! Which you might remember from this post.
I found the hat first, then a reader contacted me saying they had the matching dress if I wanted to buy it! Couldn't pass that up. I just know there's more matching accessories out there!

Who wants tea?

This April marks the 100th year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. I'd like to commemorate the day by having some sort of period costumed gathering, and tea seems like a nice way to accomplish that. I've already researched a beautiful venue here in Vancouver Washington, and would like to gauge interest before booking it. Tickets would be approximately $25-30 for a couple hours of full service tea on Saturday April 14th.
So, anyone interested?

Brunettes who wear red are evil

Remember in I Dream Of Jeannie when her evil sister would visit and wear a green, or sometimes if she's in a really evil mood, red outfit? Yeah, I've always wanted one.
In the 60s when the show aired, it's no surprise lingerie took a nod from the fun fashions of Jeannie in her bottle. I've found pieces of them before, a top here, bottoms there, but not a complete set. Until today!
Now excuse me while I go plan something evil.

Being a cat lady, cat's are often attracted to me as I have fancy cat powers.

Or I smell like meow mix.

I like to think fancy cat powers.

These kitties like to pose for pictures, until they realize I have no treats, and then run away. This kitty in particular meowed more than Hobbes, and just wanted some love. He was quite chubby, and his belly jiggled when he pranced. I call him Bubba.

When Desiree sent me the link for it on ebay, I sent it right to Sam, and he bravely out bid bunches of little old ladies for me :)
I feel as though she should be filled with little kitty shaped cookies...let's see what we can do about that.

Made hair appointment at the salon that looks like it hasn't changed since the 60s. Beautician has equally fantastic hair.

Not just any saddle shoes, but deadstock brown and cream saddle shoes. That fit. They're that quality of shoes that have to be worn in, pretty amazing. Found at Cats Pajamas.

Not quite 40s jacket

Yesterday I found this wool jacket at Goodwill for $12.99 and was pretty excited since it looks so 40s. I'll have to work on it a bit, hem it up a few inches, take it in a teeny bit, and maybe replace the buttons with something more period, but it's a great foundation. A prime example of an article of clothing that is fairly modern (80s), but can look much older with a little work, and the right styling.

A few years ago I spent the better part of my visit to an antique mall pouring over a 1930s photo album, full of pictures of a group of friends picnic outings, and other adventures. I still regret not buying it.
Now every time I see a scrapbook I open it up hoping to find a collection of pictures (it seems most have them taken out), and in the back of my mind hoping it will be that one collection of pictures I left behind.
So the other day when I opened this unassuming black scrapbook, I was elated to find photos of an all girls Canadian roadtrip. After the war Americans went a little roadtrip crazy, visiting national parks and such, or wherever they could drive.
Here's what the first page reads:
"TRIP TO BANFF AND LAKE LOUISE Evelyn Clumpner Dena Wirth Cheryl Smith Doris Plaster Jean Walton
Jean, Evie, and Cheryl Leave June 12 from Seattle for Edwall at 7:00am"
From what I can gather this was Cheryl's scrapbook (most seen in plaid shirt and jeans). There's lots of other fun pics, but these are some of my faves.

New years eve was spent with Josh, Amy, Shawn, Stef, and of course Sam. Dinner and countdown at Shigezo, photobombed downtown, and dessert and drunk photobooth pics at Voodoo Doughnuts. Sober Josh kindly drove us all home, never drive drunk!

Pajama party!

Last night was the annual pajama party at the Fab Gabs house. Julie invites all the vintage lovers she knows and we all wear out best pajamas, nightgowns, and robes, drink cocktails, eat snacks, and of course chat it up!
Oh and there is also a white elephant gift exchange, where everyone brings a little vintage gift, like books, aprons, or inflatable rain hats.
I even met a girl who was my camera twin, and she showed me some cool settings I didn't know about, and my friend Cassandra and I had the same slippers! What are the odds :)

Credit all the things.

Ok you guys. Time for a little lesson on crediting sources.

In school it was made very, very clear how important it is to credit sources that are not yours. A quote? Credit it. A photo? Credit it. Even factual information that was used to inspire your own composition? Credit it. In college, you could get into a lot of trouble for not crediting someone else's work.

So I figured it was just common sense, something everyone knew. If you present work that is not yours, you credit the person who created it.

But more and more I have been seeing my own photos, and fellow bloggers photos floating around blogs, and especially Tumblr, completely uncredited.

I'm not sure if people just don't know it's what you're supposed to do, or if they just don't know how.

So if you're confused, here's a good way to credit someones work. Example:
Disneyland via Vixen Vintage

That's it. "Disneyland" links to the post which it came from, "Vixen Vintage" links to the homepage.
Here's how to make the text link to a webpage:
If there is an HTML option, click it. Blogger has it, as does Tumblr.
Follow the directions in this tutorial (The bit titled "HTML Link Syntax" and the "Example" below).

With the photo above, lets say you want to post it on Tumblr. Instead of crediting as Via Vixen Vintage, you'll want to credit the original source as well:

This mainly credits Twila Jean, as it originally came from her site, and is her photo, but as you found it here, it's polite to also credit where you first found it. But it's not essential.
I've seen a lot of photos that people post from their personal inspiration folders, but don't remember the source. Please don't do this.
If you can't recall the source, don't post it publicly.
Even when asking "where is this from, I forgot?" can lead to someone taking the photo, publishing it elsewhere, and never going back to see if the original source was found.
It can be so easy to just take a photo from the internet, they're all over the place after all! Especially on Tumblr, where you re-publish the photo with the click of a button.
But please credit all work from it's original source, or do your best to do so.
This website, like many other bloggers, artists, and crafters is my way of life. This is my source of income, and it's insulting to see my work thought of as someone else's.
Please credit all sources. It's so very easy!

Willard Asylum Suitcases

Browsing one of my favorite blogs Foxtail + Fern, I came across a post about a suitcase project by photographer Jon Crispin.
He has been photographing suitcases, and their contents from Willard Psychiatric Center in Willard, NY.
"The cases were put into storage when their owners were admitted to Willard sometime between 1910 and the 1960s. And since the facility was set up to help people with chronic mental illness, these folks never left. An exhibit of a small selection of the cases was produced by the Museum and was on display in Albany in 2003."
It's fascinating seeing the varied contents of these unassuming suitcases. And of course a bit sad, because these were some of the only personal possessions the psychiatric patients had. Some have delicate clothing, some have crafting supplies, one even has a fine perfume bottle. And unless I overlooked something, I don't see any personal photographs, which is kind of even more tragic.
But Mr. Crispin does so well capturing all the little details, it really must be thrilling to unwrap the tissue paper, pop the locks, and open up the musty old cases to see what might be inside.

Christmas with Sherlock

Christmas day we joined my mother and her husband and saw the new Sherlock Holmes film, and I loved it just as much as the first one. My brother had given me this perfectly mini doctors bag for Christmas that I had seen in Astoria months ago, so I thought it was fitting we dressed appropriately for the viewing ;)

Old Town Orange

Sunday before we left sunny California (it's easy to forget Christmas is this week when it's bright and cheery out), we spent some time in old town Orange.
We made stops at both the womens and mens shops by Elsewhere Vintage, and I easily could have spent all day, and a small fortune at the womens shop! I stopped myself from looking at everything after I found some gold lame' cigarette pants, and a fur beret. Fabulous much?
Highly recommend both if you're ever in the area, they storekeepers were nice, and helpful, and the selection is fantastic!
We also went to Heavenly Hostess, a boutique based around the fantastic vintage style aprons, I wear mine nearly everyday, as you can see in this post. It was a bridal shower gift, and I really adore it!
So imagine how giddy I was when I asked if the women who makes the aprons lives in the area, and was told "Yes, she's standing right next to me!". So I got to meet Cynthia Wadell, and tell her how much I love my apron, which I though was pretty exciting :)
We lunched at The Fillling Station (Yum!), and browsed antique malls the lined the plaza. It was a fun afternoon!

Disneyland!

This weekend I was in Disneyland!
My mother and her husband got my cousin Ruth and I tickets to "The Happiest Place on Earth" for Christmas, so we spend all day Saturday riding rides, and avoiding about a million strollers.
I love Disneyland at Christmas time because it's decorated so festively, the castle was especially pretty.
My all time favorite ride is Pirates of the Caribbean, but I was sad that my other favorite ride, The Haunted Mansion, was completely different :(
We didn't see too many characters (seriously, busier than I've ever seen it), but I did spot a few stormtroopers patrolling Tomorrowland which was pretty cool.
We also spent a little time in the California Adventure park, and Downtown Disney, there's so much to do everywhere! Of course waiting in lines can take a bit of time, every time we were waiting, we wished we had brought snacks ;)

Jitterbuggin blouse

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Kim, the gal behind the vintage reproduction brand Jitterbuggin. She gave me this new blouse to promote, and I was more than happy to!
I usually stay away from blouses, I just hate how billowy they get after wearing them around a bit, they either fit in the bust and are too big at the waist, or the waist fits, and the bust is popping open. And finding tailored button front blouses is nearly impossible!
But this one is a new favorite, it's button front, but tailored, so I don't have any "blouse issues". I've even worn it un-tucked it's so nicely finished and fitted.
Not to mention the print is adorable :) Next time I go the local air museum, I know what I'm wearing!
Though if you're more floral than aviation, there's the same blouse in a beautiful feedsack print.

1940s boudoir slippers

Yesterday after photoshoot with Fab Gabs we did a little thrifting at Goodwill. I never expect much there, at least vintage wise, it's get's bought up pretty quickly in this area. But, browsing the shoes I spotted a little bit of creamy satin peeking out underneath a pile of shoes. I dug them out and squeals were abundant.

I've always wanted satin boudoir slippers, they're just so glamorous! And these ruffles really take the cake. 1940s satin slippers, by Daniel Green. Still in business, but the slippers really aren't the same. I'm so excited to have found them, in good condition, and they actually fit me!

And the price? $6.99.

The thrift gods were with me that day.

I found this little guy at an estate sale today. I nearly left him behind, after all, do I need a blue 1950s puppy?
Apparently I do.
I've learned with estate sales buy now, consider it later. There's a few items I've left behind in the past that I still regret, luckily this puppy will not be one of them! Glad I got him :)
As you can see, he matches my christmas tree, I still need a star for it, then I'll show it to you guys officially!

Heather Mattoon paints all these portraits, and has many for sale in her Etsy shop, which I might suggest, would make great gifts for cat lovers.
The first time a reader linked me to her shop, I was hooked. They make me giggle. I think that first one is Hobbes, and the last one is Sam.

Sometimes I get asked this question: "How do you manage to wear beautiful clothes everyday?"
Short answer: I only have beautiful clothes.
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I love every piece of clothing I own, and that makes all the difference in the world. I no longer own anything that doesn't make me feel good.
I gave away my skinny jeans over a year ago, because as much as I wanted to pull of the look, I never felt good in them as an adult (though lived in them as a teen). Days seemed more mundane, and if I were feeling down, they certainly never lifted my spirits the way other items in my wardrobe do.
I'm not trying to put anyone down who wears sweatpants on casual days, if that's what you feel good and comfortable in, by all means, do it! But I just don't feel good unless I really love my clothing aesthetically. My point is that if you have clothing you don't like, getting rid of it will negate any temptation to wear it on those days when it seems like there's no other option.
There are lots of casual yet put together looks that cost very little, and in the future I'd like to do posts on outfits that cost under $20, $10, and $5. You don't have to spend an entire paycheck for an outfit!
So now I have clothes I love to wear, and it makes me feel good. This outfit is what I wear when it's freezing cold, my hair is greasy, and my legs are less than smooth. And I feel fabulous.

It seems more and more photography collections are being discovered only after the passing of the photographer. Here is part of a collection by Wal Richards, a man who could not read or write, but would ride his bicycle around Maryborough Australia and documented weddings of strangers from the 40s to the 90s. No one knew why, and no one even saw the collection until after he passed away, but some people say these are the only photographs that exist of their wedding. One resident said "We didn't actually think he had a film in the camera, but he did ... and he captures the moment quite well," and I think that comes through in the photos. Kind of like when a child has a toy camera and pretends to take your picture, you don't feel the need to look perfectly posed. The people in these photographs look completely natural.

Pink 1950s dress $80

Fabulously pink 1950s cotton dress, with woven "print". Side metal zip, full gathered skirt, sleeveless. Shown with two petticoats underneath, not included. Small mark on front chest (as shown), very, very light underarm fade, and fabric factory flaw on back waist, email for photos, otherwise great condition.

Va-Va-Voom! Black cotton 1950s capri pants, side metal zip, and a saucy red rose applique on the right leg. Applique is slightly "puffy", with rhinestones. Excellent condition.

A beautiful summer jacket from the 1940s, made of soft white linen. Mother of pearl buttons up the front and decorating the pockets, with elbow length cuffed sleeves. A stain slightly under a button, as shown in the photo, as well as some fraying on the collar.

Doesn't get much more 50s than this! A black felt skirt, with an amazing bluebird applique! The bird (with a rhinestone eye) has it's wings spread in a golden cage, topped with a pink bow. Pink and gold circles branch out from the cage, dotted with rhinestones. Skirt has an elastic waist, and is therefore slightly gathered. Excellent condition.

Beautiful pink lace dress from the 1930s, it has a middle back metal zipper, with a pink strapless slip and lace shell. Skirt and back of bodice have staining, as well as a button missing. Could easily be dyed a darker color, it has such pretty details!

Found this beauty and couldn't leave her behind. Have since cleaned her up, and refilled the dishes. They're removable, at one time you could probably buy replacements at the makeup counter. Eventually I'd love to have it restored a bit, as much as I love the found condition, I love restoring things even more!

Exciting news! (Not of the baby variety)

And here is my first post as a full time blogger!
Wheeeee!
I quit my job working at a local vintage store, and now you guys have me all to yourselves. I feel very fancy. Though it was hard to quit my job of nearly four years, it was sort of the reluctance of leaving that made me decide I had to let it go. Can't move forward if you don't let go!
So from now on I'm expecting to do about five posts a week, more giveaways, features, and hopefully show you more of my collection that doesn't usually make it on here. Ok, here we go!
Today I tagged along with my mother and grandma to the Pendleton mill store for some Christmas presents. My favorite Pendleton wool scarf/shawl was a must. Instead of just belting it like I usually do, I folded it into a little bustle :)

Because bustles are cool.
This has kind of been my "go to" autumn outfit, which seems to change every year.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm very attached to "things". It's taken me a while to realize that as it may be superficial, things make me happy. Of course it's not the only thing that make me happy, there are those cliche moments that I love the most, but honestly I love pretty things, and surround myself with them.

Lately I've been simplifying. To de-clutter, and make some extra cash, especially this time of year.

I pull out all my clothes, look at each piece, and decide if I need it. Some stay, there are those that I know I will keep forever like the skirt I was wearing when Sam proposed to me, and some I know I'll eventually have to let go of. Then there are those that are on their way to be sold.

Today I did it again. Only this time I meant to be rock solid, and really get rid of things. That dress I've only ever worn once? Yeah, someone else will wear it all the time. Those skirts you've grown out of? Time to let go.

Then I got to a robe. My beautiful navy blue wool robe, with a silk polka dot hood. I'ts a little too small. I'm usually too warm to wear it inside. But I remember spotting it at the shop, hidden on the back of a pillar, and my heart skipped a beat. And I asked to see it almost in a panic, as if someone would grab it before I could. And how perfect it was.

And then like a little girl, I started crying. I hate crying. I'd rather eat a worm than have anyone see me cry. Actually I'd feel sorry for the worm. How about oilves? Gross.

And then I realized that my clothes aren't just things. To other people they are, but to me, they're my lifes work. Iv'e spent years accumulating all my clothes, and wearing them, and taking proper care of them. They are me. I didn't just walk into a vintage store one day and buy an entire wardrobe, these all come from different places, and different times of my life. And I remember buying them, and the excitement and thrill of finding that one of a kind, special piece. Wearing each one, and gosh what was I thinking paring that with those shoes, and when I wear this dress everyone calls me Snow White.

I think anyone who has a collection of any kind can understand. It's practically impossible to let go, because this is at it's core, your life. I'm sure it would be different if I had children, but for now my wardrobe is what I've created, something I'm very proud of, and something I have a terrible time letting go of. I get offended when people want to buy my things without them being offered because I think "I spent years of constant searching and building to have what I have, you expect me to just hand a part of it over?"

So here I am, surrounded by piles and racks of beautiful clothes, with a pile to let go of. I know you guys will give them good homes, much better than in a box under the bed. But I'm still attached to the robe. Maybe next time. Maybe never. I have lots of clothes I don't wear anymore that I can't even begin to think of selling. Perhaps one day I'll wear them again, or hopefully one of my little cousins will want to wear them.

Either way, I like my pretties. They're as much a part of my life as anything.

Oh hi, yeah, this is just my coat.
My awesome coat.
I got it at the antique expo last month, and while I searched it inside out five times, the Christian Dior tag seems to be missing. If anyone finds it laying around, let me know.
I wore it Saturday when Sam and I did a little shopping and sushi-ing on NW 23rd. We stopped by Goorin Brothers and I blushed a little when everyone in the store went gaga over it. But then we went to the M.A.C. store and I actually did buy blush, so it all worked out.
{I asked the makeup artist for blush, and she said "this one will make you look like you just stepped in from the cold. Or like Snow White.}
How did she know that's exactly what I wanted?
It's called "Pink Swoon" in case you're wondering.
I even met a blog reader on the street, she was nice enough to say hello and chat for a moment! To be honest, it never really hits me that more people read my blog than my mom and friends until someone I don't know says something in person.
I am oblivious.
But oblivious in a fabulous coat.

I wore a lot of 70s styles in middle school. I wasn't particularly into the era as I am with the 30s, 40s, and 50s, currently, but more that was what was in style then. Flared jeans. Peasant tops. I even had a purple faux fur vest my aunt and uncle brought me back from Germany I thought was pretty cool. Point is, I have a soft spot for 70s style. LOVE Gunne Sax. I should have more fringed things. And I do love a good jumpsuit. Lately I've been searching for a good pair of high waist wide legged jeans, and found these at work just last week!
The hat is my new cold weather staple, it's so warm! Like when a kitty sleeps on your head.
And the blouse is something I picked up at an estate sale for 50 cents, a perfectly worn and soft blouse. Must have been a favorite of the original owners as well.

Went Christmas shopping at some local thrift and vintage shops, and while I did find a couple of Christmas gifts, I also found a bunch of things I couldn't pass up. It's to be expected....
Kitty. He wanted to come home with me.
Wool! I never find natural fiber yarn at thrift stores, at least not more than one skein. Yay!

Kitty box. For...sewing type things? I dunno, but look at how cute it is!
Glitter cutting board. For cutting fancy things.
Another "Paradise Kittens" shoebox. I have two of the shoeboxes, but none of that brand of shoes...
Sparkly faceted bangles. For wearing as I cut fancy vegetables on my sparkly cutting board.

Mini Jello molds for making cute Jello. Hopefully making an appearance soon on my food blog.
I collect the plain pink rimmed diner dishes, but this one was too cool to pass up.
Knitting needles in really cool pink packaging. A bright 60s swimsuit, with cutouts! Not sure if I'll keep it, as I do live in Washington state, and have a bunch of other swimsuits that never get worn. But it's so cool!

My favorite (and only) knee high boots. When searching for these all I could find were lace up boots with zippers on the side. Drives me crazy. Both aesthetically and because I walk with my legs so close together the zipper gets caught and I trip all over the place.
Why have lace up boots if I don't get to lace them? That's half the fun!
And now that the cooler weather has hit, nothing is warmer than knee high boots, warm socks, soft sweater, and a wool skirt. Ok, tights would probably be warmer, but it's not that cold.

A few weeks ago my friend Sarah sent me this beautiful handmade headband from her shop Branchbound. It reminded me of the delicate boudoir hair decor that was popular in the 20s, so this morning kitty and I took some pics in our loungewear (I in a vintage kimono, he in his fluffy fur). Because some gray and cold mornings require pink wool socks, big kitties, and pretty thing just for fun.

1950s Watercolor rose dress $80 A beautiful silk watercolor dress from the 1950s, it has a criss-cross bodice and sash like waistline. Three quarter length sleeves, and even a small petticoat built in. Dress is shown with a separate petticoat underneath, which is not included. The only flaw is a small area of thread separation on the right shoulder. Not prominent. Small, non invasive marks may be on the dress, but the watercolor print is so busy, I could not detect any that were immediately visible. Bust-34 Waist-24 Bodice-15 Skirt-26

Late 1940s black wool princess coat $250This coat is from my own collection, dating from the late 40s, it's a very "New look" coat. Made from very soft black wool, it has two pockets, a fur collar, lined in black silk, shoulder pads, and even has a little padding at the hips (yes, women used to pad their hips, not try to hide them, imagine that!)

The coat is missing a button, in the photo below you can see the way it's meant to be closed, and in the photo above, the way I always just wore it. There is only one pin sized moth hole in the side skirt, not visible unless held up to light. 1950s iridescent party dress $80 This dress is THE holiday dress of all holiday dresses. Iridescent silk shows off vibrant blues and purples, and sometimes in the right light, a little pink. The shelf bust is framed with an extended collar, and the nipped waist is accented with a matching belt. A small petticoat is built in, shown with separate petticoats, not included. Antique Expo!

Three times a year, Palmer and Wirfs puts on a huge antique show at the expo center in Portland. I try to go every time with Twila Jean every time, but the last few times I didn't, so for this one we went all out and dressed as nurses.
Why?
Because we both had vintage nurse uniforms and figured this was a good time to wear them. Doesn't everyone have a vintage nurse uniform laying around waiting to be worn?
However, every man over 60 we passed said "Oh! I'm feeling fain! I need a nurse!" and thought that was the most clever, original thing we'd ever heard. Needless to say, we're becoming quite the novelty at these things.

I walked away with a black princess coat, a hoop skirt (because I need a hoop skirt. Of course.) and eleven bakelite bangles.

I went the next day with my friend Lulu where we ran into Hannah (right) and her friend Sara (middle). I know Hannah from facebook and such, and it was so nice to finally meet her! And Sara was a delight. We all bumped into each other multiple times at the show, and showed off our purchases and chit chatted about this that and the other.

I really fell in love with this GIANT metal wall flowery-thingy. It was about four feet tall, and the flowers are lights! IT LIGHTS UP!!! But I had to leave it behind. It it something I will eventually need in my life though. I just need a house to put around it.
And here is a pic of Lulu and I! (Notice the mini Hobbes on my sweater...). Lulu got some cute household items and Christmas presents (smart girl), and the second day I got a couple more bangles, a pink 49er, and a fabulously witchy 40s stetson, which you can kind of see me holding. All will be in future outfit posts ;)

The other day I posted on Facebook and Twitter something about wearing a 49er, and got so many questions as to what on earth that was! So here's the explanation:

Pendelton has been a source of northwest pride for nearly a century, famous for Native American motif blankets, and classic plaid shirts. In 1949, they introduced the first item for a womens line, the Pendleton 49er. A simply tailored jacket with big patch pockets, and six large mother of pearl buttons, it's been a Pendleton signature ever since. Very collectible with vintage gals, they're fairly easy to find here, and the company has even re-introduced them into their modern collection. Though my biased vintage opinion is that they're not nearly as high quality as the originals ;)

That being said, I have one Minnesota woolens jacket of the same design (they became very popular with many designers and home seamstresses), and this one is an actual Pendleton, beat up and frayed, this must have been someones favorite jacket! I just couldn't pass it up though, all those amazing colors! I could easily have an addiction to these things. So far I've only got the two, but I see more in my future ;)

I love finding items in my closet in old ads or photos. I picked this hat up in Kansas City over the summer, and am really excited the weather is crisp enough to wear it! Flipping through a reproduction 1940s Sears catalogue recently, I found a very similar style from 1940.

And if you ever have as much trouble as I do keeping your blouse tucked into your skirt, try tucking it into your girdle instead, won't slip around!

Don't usually post on weekends, but there were too many pics to post on Facebook :)Sam and I went to an estate sale late in the day, where we ran into my friend Dana, and both swooned over the mid century kitchen with the most fantastic oven I've ever seen. These pics really don't do it justice.

The itty bitty fridge! Love. They had another full sized fridge from the same period in the garage.

Even the dishwasher was cute.
I left with all these fantastic 40s and 50s belts, only 50 cents each! The benefit of going to an estate sale late is they usually have a "half off" type thing going. My favorite is the red studded belt, and the one on the far right is Whiting and Davis! And these darling little strawberry blossom spoons. Not sure exactly what they are, drink stirrers? Too cute whatever they are. I also got a pretty 40s tweed suit that's now at the cleaners. I wanted to get a 60s tweed suit with matching shoes, but the suit just wasn't all that cute. Dana got a darling plaid suit with matching hat though! Gotta love estate sales.

Doris Petticoats

I get asked quite a bit where I get my petticoats. Unfortunately I can never really direct readers to a specific petticoat place, as I buy them at various vintage and antique stores. But a few weeks ago Doris Petticoats contacted me to try out one of their petticoats, how could I refuse?:)
Made from 39 yards of soft chiffon nylon, it's one of those super fluffy petticoats that invite swirling and swishing every five minutes. And unlike tulle petticoats, it's not "itchy", a complaint I hear often, these are very soft and lush. I got the 21" length, which works under shorter vintage skirts, not the longer "new look" lengths.
If you like to wear petticoats as skirt (as I did in high school), they have cute satin bows as an added bonus. How darling is that? The only downsize I can see is that there is no plus size option, which I'm sure would be very welcome!
So final review is I'm very happy with the petticoat, it's well made, comfortable, and if I had a daughter, I'd totally get her a matching one, as they carry children's sizes as well. Another feature to note is that the elastic waistband is adjustable, with a hidden button fastening and two buttonholes that can be easily changed. I think these are a great product if you wear shorter full skirts. The one I paired with it is 24" and they worked perfectly together.

How to wear a petticoat.

I've decided this will be petticoat week, sound good?
Ok. Lets get started.
Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions, basically how to wear the correct petticoat with the correct dress or skirt.
Many petticoats you may find today are square dance petticoats. These modern petticoats meant to be worn under short and full square dance dresses, and are in turn, very short and full. These are something you want to avoid under your average 1950s full skirt, because even though they have the effect of fullness at the top, the base has an undesirable waterfall effect that causes a break at the skirt. This one is actually not as full as many square dance petticoats, but conveys the general idea:

Below we have a layer by layer look at the correct way to add fullness to a full pleated skirt. This dress is from the early 1950s, and has a longer and fuller skirt. At a glance it would seem a very full petticoat is underneath the frock, however, there are in fact three double layer petticoats stacked on one another:

Now, I should note that an authentic 1950s look would not have the petticoat peeking out the hem. It can be a cute look if an inch is below the skirt hem, but personally I prefer the traditional way, completely covered. Part of the allure of a petticoat is to have it hidden under a skirt until you step just right or sit just right so that a little bit shows. But again, that's just my personal taste :)

Next up we have a late 50s/early 60s dress with a semi full pleated skirt. This one is shorter and less full that the previous dress.

Only a single, one layer petticoat is required to add a bit of fullness.

Here is an example of being a little too ambitious with petticoats. Adding too much underneath, with a less full skirt can cause a muffin. As you can see the skirt is too narrow for so full of petticoats, and looks stretched out.
And last but not least, the circle skirt. This is a pretty little felt dress with a full circle skirt, which can handle many petticoats. Two of my shorter and fullest ones seem to do the trick:

So there we have it. I hope that helped you out if you have some petticoats and weren't sure how to wear them, or are looking to start your own collection. Petticoat tips
Be sure your petticoat sits on your natural waist. Not too tight, but snug enough so that it doesn't slide down. Hiking up a petticoat all day kind of ruins the elegant effect.
Sometimes when I want a certain color under a dress, but the petticoat is too long, I safety pin it to a long line bra. Front, back, and sides.
Hand wash petticoats in warm water with dish soap, rinse, and lay out to dry.
If you take an uncommon size, look for a petticoat that has an elastic casing, so you can adjust it to custom fit you. If the elastic is sewn to the fabric, it's much more difficult to adjust.
Minimal space, maximum petticoats? Hang them from a secure hook on the ceiling.
If you don't have access to a fabric steamer to get some wrinkles out, hang the petticoat in the bathroom while the shower is going a few times. The steam should help work out some major wrinkles.

Closet rotation

I've had a few requests for how I rotate my closet. Basically, I have so many clothes, and an average size closet, so I rotate seasonally to ensure everything "gets a turn". So here's how I do it. There is little method to the madness.
First, ALL clothes and accessories come out of the closet. All my cotton sundresses and petticoats on the bed. Shoes and purses in the living room.

The coats and jackets are piled on the couch, having been stored at my grandmothers. Also unpacked sweaters and skirts from a huge cedar chest we have, all contents covering the floor, my house is a mess!

Kitty enjoyed it very much of course. Can you spot him?


Vacuum out all the dust and kitty fuzz (so much kitty fuzz!)


And start with the shoes. Boots! Yay! I had just realized that this vintage shoe rack expands. It was a very
exciting moment.

For placing clothes back in the closet it goes as follows: Pick items I know WILL be worn, and that are easy to wear. For example, this dress got worn a lot last autumn, so it goes in the closet first. Then I put in items I want to wear, but may not be everyday things, like this dress.


I don't have a dresser for knits, so I fold them and put them in this hat storage box. Anything knit (or crochet) should be folded, NEVER on a hanger. If you hang them for a long period of time, they'll get those
weird hanger bumps in the shoulders.


And a moth sachet goes in with the knits. These smell pretty good, nothing like musty mothballs.


My one exception for hanging knits is for my mustard sweater. I hang it on a padded hanger at the front of
my coat rack, since I wear it nearly everyday it's best to have easy access to it.


All summer items are packed away. I organize them by tops, bottoms, and dresses, in bins under my bed, suitcases around the house (great decor and storage!), and the cedar chest mentioned earlier. I have one bin under my bed, right across from my closet that have some fall-ish items in there that wouldn't fit in the closet,
just in case I want to wear them, but don't want to dig through everything else.

And 2.5 hours later, finished fall closet with dresses, blouses, skirts, sweataers, purses, and shoes...

And another rack holding coats and jackets (and my colorful gloves in the back).

As you can see in the closet photo, not everything is confined to the racks. I never close the closet doors, so robes, belts, and little furry foxes go on them. No space left unused!

Saturday Sam and I met up with Lara Blair for a pumpkin patch photoshoot :) I got one pumpkin that has turned into pumpkin curry soup, and the other one might become something sweet!

Wake up, lay in cozy bed and watch tv and check twitter. Accidentally wake up kitty. Oops!
Breakfast and tea.
Get dressed.
Walk to post office.
Antique P.O. boxes are still there. One day they won't be anymore.
Grilled corn with mayo and cotija at Woody's Tacos. So amazing.
Walk back home. One of my favorite old buildings, still a florist.
Kitty is right where I left him.
Tea and cookie. Sushi with Twila Jean and her mama.
Lazy days are my favorite.

Deco Picnic

Here are snaps of the little art deco picnic Thursday afternoon, a lovely sendoff for the end of summer. It was held on the grounds of The Pittock Mansion, overlooking Portland and the surrounding scenery. Highly recommend if you visit! Or if you live here :)
It was so pleasant to meet some readers, and spend time with friends, with an abundance of picnic food and warm breezes. Everyone looked lovely, a few of the gals were decked out in gorgeous chiffon dresses, and the two boys who were outnumbered looked dapper as ever. Here's hoping we can do this next year, but with more notice this time, I promise!

1930s picnic outfit

Today was out little Deco Picnic at the glorious Pittock Mansion, and it turned out so perfect I can't wait to show you pictures! But I think the outfit and picnic deserve separate posts ;)
Here is a dress I picked up at an antique shop (mis-dated, and priced how I like it), with The Gatsby Summer Afternoon in mind. The dress and I didn't make it there this year, and so today was the day it came off the hanger, and became part of an outfit! I starched it so it's like new, and added a brown slip underneath. Matching bakelite was a must ;)
And the hat from Poppycock Vintage topped it off perfectly! And one last thing, my hair was super sweet to me and did exactly what I wanted it to. I un-pinned it this morning, and it looked like a perfect 30s style, so a hairnet and lots of hairspray later made it last all day!

Blogger meetup!

Saturday morning, I met up with fellow vintage blogger Debi, of My Happy Sewing Place! All the way from across the pond no less, I was so excited to meet her, and I just new she would wear something she made herself, and she did of course!
We hit a few estate sales, as those are sadly non-existent in Scotland, and both came away with some goodies! She got lots of fabric, and I found some jewelry and mason jars. Then we grabbed some yummy Mexican food and chatted about sewing and knitting.
Perfect morning I say! It was such a nice time, I hope she'll come back to the states again soon!

Pittock Deco Picnic

Since a few of us local gals missed The Gatsby Summer Picnic this year, we decided to lift our deco spirits a bit by having a little impromptu picnic of our own. Then we thought, hey, the more the merrier! So, if you're free this Thursday afternoon, put on a 20s or 30s frock, bring a picnic lunch in a pretty little basket, and join us for a casual get together on the lawn of The Pittock Mansion!

Here are pics from the Gatsby picnic last year if you need inspiration! Won't be as grand of course, but still fun!

How to tie an easy turban

This scarf is just one of those modern cotton (or in this case rayon) scarves that are everywhere, in every color, made from jersey and generally worn in a cowl style around the neck. I love these things, and I love the cowl look, but am always a bit disappointed because that's the only way I ever see the scarves used. They're so versatile!
So here's a little tutorial on how to wrap one into a very sleek turban, but this is just one way! Play with it a bit and you'll find endless possibilities!
Center it flat on your head...
...twist the sides a bit...
...then bring the sides up, cross...
...and twist.
Bring down on the sides...
...and around the back.
Then bring the ends up and tuck into the twisty top bit, where the arrow is.
Pull out the top middle portion, the bit under the twists, and stretch forward.
Pull up and above the twists, and tuck.
And there you have it! Don't even need any pins! Perfect for bad hair days ;)

I'm attracted to warm mustard colors for fall like a moth to a flame.
I don't know where it started, but ever since knitting my sweater last year, I can't keep away, and luckily it's a very popular color this year! It's everywhere!
This weekend I joined my mother and cousin Ruth for some fall shopping in Portland. It was a perfectly gray day, and we all went home with something. It seemed an ideal day for wearing a new scarf and matching shoes, if you're interested in the way the scarf is wrapped, I'll do a tutorial on here soon!
The shoes are a gift from ModCloth, and I got asked about a thousand times where they're from! And as you can see, I do love shoes...
